Variants

Io(Error)

The audit log could not be read from disk.

Corrupt(String)

The last line of the audit log was present but could not be parsed as a chained record (malformed JSON, wrong-length hash, etc.). Refusing to start is the safe response — a silent reset would let new records chain from [0; 32] while prior records chain from a different head, breaking verify_chain for the entire audit history.
