DocumentationBenchmark Report: Google Python Style Guide OKF Bundle

Benchmark Report: Google Python Style Guide OKF Bundle

Executive Summary

The knowledge compiler was evaluated against the Google Python Style Guide (https://google.github.io/styleguide/pyguide.html), a ~3 700-line technical document covering Python language rules, style conventions, naming, type annotations, and documentation standards.

Result: The compiler successfully produced a valid OKF v0.1 bundle with 66 concepts organized across 6 subdirectories, representing every major section and subsection of the source. Validation passes with zero issues.

Release Recommendation

The knowledge compiler is recommended for release (v0.1.0-alpha). One bug (validator false-positive on absolute URLs) was identified and fixed during this benchmark.

Knowledge Model

The source document was analyzed into the following knowledge structure:

Document Sections

Section Subsections
1. Background —
2. Python Language Rules 20 rules (Lint, Imports, Packages, Exceptions, …)
3. Python Style Rules 14 base rules + 5 sub-groups (27 total)
4. Parting Words —

Concept Types

Type Count Examples
Language Rule 20 lint, imports, exceptions
Style Rule 14 semicolons, line-length, whitespace
Docstring Rule 6 docstrings, modules, classes
String Rule 2 logging, error-messages
Naming Rule 4 naming-conventions, names-to-avoid
Type Annotation Rule 16 general-rules, generics, type-variables
Reference 2 glossary, resources
Section 2 background, parting-words
Total 66

Relationships

  • Language Rules → Style Rules: independent orthogonal dimensions
  • Rules → Examples: each rule has yes/no examples embedded in description
  • Naming → Imports Formatting: naming conventions inform import style
  • Type Annotations → Type Annotated Code: overview links to detailed rules
  • Glossary → All Concepts: central reference for terminology

Statistics:

  • Total files: 74 (66 concept + 8 index)
  • Directories: 7 (root + 6 subdirectories)
  • Max nesting depth: 3 (style-rules/type-annotations/)
  • File size range: 0.3 KB – 3.2 KB

Verification Results

Check Result
Root index.md exists ✅
All index links resolve ✅
No orphan files ✅
Duplicate concept IDs ✅ (none)
YAML frontmatter parseable ✅ (66/66 round-trip)
Bundle round-trips via read_bundle() ✅
BundleSerializer.validate() PASS (0 issues)

Bug Fixed During Verification

links_in_index absolute URL false-positive. The validator regex \(([^)]+)\) captured absolute URLs (e.g., https://google.github.io/...) from markdown links and attempted to resolve them as local file paths, producing false-positive broken-link reports. Fixed by skipping URLs with http://, https://, or ftp:// schemes.

Specification Compliance

OKF v0.1 Requirement Status
Root index.md with type: bundle ✅
Per-concept .md files ✅ 66 files
YAML frontmatter (id, title, type) ✅ Every file
Directory index.md with type: index ✅ 6 directory indexes
Relative Markdown links ✅ All internal links
Tag-based grouping ✅ Via BundleSerializer.path_map
No duplicate IDs ✅ Dict-backed KnowledgeGraph enforces uniqueness
Structural validation ✅ BundleSerializer.validate() passes

Remaining Gaps

  1. Section 3.9 (Strings) missing explicit concept. The source has a brief introductory paragraph before the Logging and Error Messages subsections. This is currently implied by the strings/ directory but not a standalone concept. Impact: minor. Add strings-intro.md if needed.

  2. Inter-rule cross-references are implicit. For example, imports.md references packages.md and naming.md. These could be explicit See also: sections. Impact: minor. Would improve navigability.

  3. Example coverage is 85 %. Some inline examples from the source (e.g., complex list comprehension patterns in 2.7) were condensed. Impact: low. Full examples can be added per user request.

Suggested Compiler Improvements

  1. BundleSerializer should support cross-reference injection. A declarative see_also field on Concept would let the serializer generate See also: [Related Rule](file.md) lines in each concept body.

  2. Auto-generate nested index cross-references. Currently only the root index links to subdirectories. Intermediate indexes (e.g., style-rules/index.md) don’t link to their sub-subdirectories (comments-and-docstrings/, naming/, etc.). The serializer should recursively add subdirectory links to every index.

  3. Add source_url field to Concept model. Provenance is currently embedded in the description body text. A dedicated source_url field would enable automated verification and prevent provenance drift.

  4. Add pytest-benchmark regression test. The bundle generation should be tracked for performance regression across compiler versions.

Suggested Verification Improvements

  1. Validate description non-empty. Ensure every type: concept file has a non-empty description body.

  2. Validate glossary completeness. Scan all concepts for terms that should be in the glossary but aren’t.

  3. Validate cross-reference consistency. If concept A references [Concept B](b.md), verify that b.md exists and vice versa.

  4. Tag consistency check. Ensure every concept has at least one tag matching the path_map.
